MLex: Europe’s AI data-center expansion plans raise concerns over prices, grid strain (Maria Nowicka)
In this MLex article, Maria Nowicka, Policy Researcher Global Chip Dynamics, evaluated the European Commission's strategy to expand AI and data-center capacity under the Cloud and AI Development Act (CADA) and the AI Gigafactories initiative. She highlighted that EU policy currently fails to distinguish between conventional data centers and high-density AI compute clusters, which generate extreme, concentrated power demands of hundreds of megawatts per site. Consequently, she argued that administrative measures like accelerated permitting fail to address the fundamental grid integration challenges facing European energy systems.
